Origin and history

Velotte's large wash fountain is a public building built during the first half of the 19th century, located in the town of Amblans-et-Velotte, Haute-Saône. This type of monument, typical of the rural villages of the time, served as both a drinking water point and a collective washing place, playing a central role in the daily lives of the inhabitants. Its architecture reflects the practical and social needs of the agricultural communities of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.

The fountain was listed as a historical monument by order of 2 January 1986, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the municipality, it is located precisely at 8 Rue de la Vie de Velotte, according to data from the Merimée database. Although its adjacent workshop in the east is excluded from protection, the main building testifies to construction techniques and the spatial organization of villages in the 19th century.

In the historical context of the 19th century Haute-Saône, the fountains were places of female sociability, where the lavender trees were found to wash laundry while exchanging news. These water infrastructures, often fed by sources or catchment networks, also illustrated progress in public hygiene and rural development under the influence of the then health policies.
