Maison de la Gélinais (Box A2,787): registration by order of 29 August 1988
Origin and history
The barn of La Gélinais is a house located in the commune of Saint-Germain-en-Coglès, in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany. It is located at the place called the Gélinais, near the Marigny pond, northeast of the department and east of the town. This building, built on the edge of the 16th and 17th centuries, illustrates the rural architecture of this period in Coglais, an area known for its high quality granite constructions.
The house, currently uninhabited and used as a cellar, has a multi-function structure spread over two floors. On the ground floor there is a room with fireplace and wall cabinet, as well as an old barn whose door is now walled. Upstairs, a bedroom with fireplace and an attic are accessible by a granite screw staircase, located in the southeast corner of the room. The frame, composed of two farms with a moulded punch, and the granite and stone walls bear witness to remarkable architectural know-how.
The Gélinais barn was listed as historical monuments by order of 29 August 1988. This classification recognizes its heritage value, both for its characteristic architecture and for its state of conservation. The cover was redone, and a door opened later in the west gable, marking a minor overhaul of the original structure.
This monument is representative of rural houses in the Coglais region, where granite was widely used for construction. Its internal organization reflects the agricultural and domestic needs of the time, mixing living spaces, storage and livestock. The proximity of the Marigny pond and the chapel of the same name, also classified, reinforces the historical and tourist interest of the site.
The location of the barn, although documented, is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5 out of 10), according to available data. It is referenced under the code Insee 35273 for the commune of Saint-Germain-en-Coglès, in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine. No information is provided on its accessibility to the public or on any current tourist use.
