Origin and history

The tithe barn of Malesherbes, located in Montigny-le-Guedier (Seine-et-Marne), was built in the second half of the 16th century. It belonged to the chapter of Saint-Étienne de Sens, a religious institution whose property, devastated during the Hundred Years' War and then by the armies of Condé, was restored at that time. This agricultural building was used to collect the tithe, tax in kind levied for the Church.

Sold as a national property during the French Revolution, the barn passed into the hands of private owners. It was listed in the Historical Monuments by order of 12 December 1997 (cadastral reference C 376), thus recognizing its heritage interest. Its current address, 2 rue de la Queue-du-Loup, corresponds to its historical location.
