Door used to be used as entrance to the dime barn: inscription by order of 3 October 1929

Origin and history

The tithe barn of Marcilly-en-Bassigny is a historic monument located in the commune of the same name, in the Haute-Marne (Great East region). Built in the seventeenth century, it illustrates the rural architecture of this period, marked by the importance of agricultural activities and seigneurial or ecclesiastical structures. This type of building was traditionally used to store the tithe, a tax in kind levied on farmers' crops for the benefit of the church or local lords.

The entrance door to this barn, the only part protected by an order of October 3, 1929, bears witness to its past use. In modern times, tithe barns played a central role in the local economy, symbolizing both the region's agricultural wealth and the dependency relationships between peasants and religious or noble authorities. Their preservation today offers an overview of the social and economic practices of Champagne-Ardenne under the Ancien Régime.
