Origin and history

The oval barn of the Montet, located in Ségur-le-Château en Corrèze, is an emblematic 18th century rural building. This monument is distinguished by its main facade pierced by a large carriageway door, composed of two walls in masonry advancing inside. The space is girded by a dry, oval-shaped stone wall, while the roof, initially stubble, was replaced by corrugated sheet metal plates. Originally, this barn-stable housed a cornadis separating the livestock space, which is now extinct.

The internal structure is based on four poles delimiting a central space, connected by entrances supporting traditional farms. An outage, maintained by two punches and croup crossbows, forms the roof frame, complemented by a network of sand and chevron faults. This system, characteristic of limousine barns, illustrates a technical mastery adapted to the agricultural needs of the time. The barn was listed in the Historical Monuments Inventory by order of 4 October 1993, recognizing its heritage value.

The building reflects the farming practices of the 18th century in Limousin, where barns served as both a storage place and a shelter for livestock. Its oval plan and local materials (dry stone, wood) testify to a vernacular architecture optimized for available resources. The subsequent modification of the roof and the suppression of the cornadis show a gradual adaptation to the changes in usage, while maintaining the bulk of its original structure.

The location of the barn, at Le Montet Haut, and its state of conservation considered very satisfactory (note 8/10) make this a remarkable example of rural heritage. The photographs available, such as that of Father Igor under Creative Commons license, document his current aspect, while his mention in the Mérimée base confirms his anchoring in the territory of the commune of Ségur-le-Château (code Insee 19254).
