Origin and history
The Musée du Granit, owned by the commune of Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie, is managed by the community of Normandy-Mont Saint-Michel, in collaboration with the Department of the Manche. This museum, labeled Musée de France, focuses on ethnology, industrial history and geology, highlighting the Vire Blue, a local granite known for its hardness and stability. The site revolves around a vast park with remarkable trees, where thematic lodges explain the geology, size and varied uses of this stone, from urban pavements to aeronautical components.
The peak of granite activity in Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie dates back to the first half of the 20th century, during which a hundred quarries were exploited in the communal territory. Today, extraction has specialized (headstones, chimneys, precision marbles), but the museum perpetuates this heritage through a demonstration career, old tool windows and a collection of sculptures. A documentary film and detailed cartels complete the visit, illustrating the work of the carriers and the evolution of techniques.
The park-museum, located in the heart of the village, combines industrial and artistic heritage, with major outdoor exhibits and works by a local sculptor. The exceptional qualities of granite – strength, precision – have made it a popular material, including for high-tech sectors such as aerospace. The site thus offers a complete panorama, from artisanal extraction to contemporary innovation, to the social history of workers.
Although administratively located in Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie (code Insee 50144, Department of the Manche), the museum is often associated with Couluvray-Boisbenâtre, perhaps reflecting a geographical or historical proximity. Its official address, 1171 Route de la Carrière, and its label Musée de France make it a reference point for understanding the impact of granite on Norman territory.
