Origin and history
The farm of Essigny-le-Grand is a farm located in the commune of Essigny-le-Grand, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the first half of the 20th century, it is distinguished by its architecture and role in the post-First World War rural reconstruction project. It is located at 21 rue de Castres and was designed by architect Adrien Blomme.
The farm was built from 1923 on the initiative of Baron Evence Coppée, a Belgian industrialist who wanted to rebuild the rural and agricultural landscape of the Aisne and Somme after the destruction caused by the war. Coppée bought several sweets and founded the Somme's industrial and sugar company, returning 4,000 hectares to cultivation and rebuilding thirteen farms. Essigny-le-Grand is considered the best example of this innovative industrialized agriculture project.
The farm was listed as historic monuments on 7 June 2004. The protected elements include facades and roofs, as well as the entire interior courtyard, with its pediluvius. This ranking underscores the heritage importance of this site, both for its architecture and its historical role in the agricultural modernization of the region.
