Origin and history

The lime ovens of Gravelets are a former industrial site specializing in lime production, located in the commune of Montmartin-sur-Mer, in the department of Manche. Dating from the 19th century, these installations illustrate the typical construction techniques of the period, with galleries girding the base of the furnaces and side ducts dedicated to the regulation of drawing and unloading. Their functional architecture reflects the economic importance of lime in the construction and agriculture sectors during this industrial period.

The site, located at Les Carrières et Les Coins du Fourneau, ceased operations after World War I in 1914. Its designation as historic monuments by order of 5 March 1996 underlines its heritage value, although the ovens are now privately owned. The protected elements specifically include the furnace structures (box B 173 and A 272), thus marking the preservation of a regional technical heritage.

The location of the ovens, at approximately 2 Rue du Rocher, is part of a landscape marked by the exploitation of local resources. Their design, with descending ducts leading to discharge holes, optimized production at a time when lime was essential for mortars, agricultural amendments and chemical processes. The cessation of their operation coincides with the economic and technological upheavals of the early twentieth century, including the increasing mechanization and emergence of new materials.

Today, the Gravelets ovens are a material testimony of the 19th century industrial know-how in Normandy. Their preservation allows us to study pre-industrial production methods and their integration into the rural economic fabric. Although their access is restricted (private property), their classification contributes to the collective memory of the extractive and transformative activities that have shaped the Manchese territory.
