Origin and history

Charlieu's attic is a building located in the commune of Charlieu, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This type of building, typical of medieval or modern cities, was mainly used to store salt, an essential and taxed commodity, controlled by royal or seigneurial authority. Although its construction period is not specified, its existence reflects the economic and administrative importance of salt in the region.

Salt attices played a key role in the daily lives of local people. They were often associated with the perception of the gabelle, a salt tax, and symbolized central power. In Charlieu, as in other cities, this monument could also serve as a place of redistribution or trade, strengthening its anchor in the economic and social life of the city.
