Origin and history
The Figuier Cave is a natural cave located in Marseille, in the calanques massif, northwest of Cap Morgiou. It is a few hundred meters from the cave of the Triperia, in an area rich in archaeological cavities. This cave, like its neighbours, bears witness to a human occupation dating back at least to the Paleolithic period of construction mentioned in the sources.
With the Cosquer Cave and the Triperia Cave, the Figuier Cave is one of the protected cavities of the calanques. These sites were classified as historical monuments by order of 2 September 1992, thereby recognizing their heritage and archaeological importance. Classification covers the parcel and all remains contained therein, including associated underground networks.
The Figuier Cave is located in the 9th arrondissement of Marseille, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department (code Insee 13055). Although its access is restricted to preserve the remains, it is a key element of the speleological and prehistoric heritage of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. His study contributes to the understanding of the lifestyles of paleolithic populations in the Mediterranean.
