Origin and history

The Villegoudou school group, located in Castres on the left bank of the Agout, was built in the 1930s in an Art Deco style. It brings together a kindergarten and primary school, and was labeled Heritage of the 20th century in 2016. Its architecture reflects modern principles of brightness and space, characteristic of the school buildings of this time.

In the 1920s, the socialist municipality of Henri Sizaire entrusted the architect Georges Benne with the construction of this school group to replace two unhealthy schools on the boulevard Carnot. The project, launched in 1932, includes a kindergarten for 300 children, a girls' school for 320 students, and eight teaching staff units. The works involve local artisans and regional companies, such as the Cerutti de Montauban constructions or the Aimé Pezet de Castres ironworks.

The project, which began at the end of 1932, ended with the inauguration of the school group on April 28, 1935. The architect Georges Benne opts for a Dizy brick, imported from northern France, and designs a symmetrical and monumental ensemble. The interior sets in staff are made by Jean Labor, while the metal elements come from the Tarn workshops in Lavaur. In 2022, the site was listed as a historical monument, including the original meadows, courtyards and fences.

This school group is part of a national context for the modernization of educational infrastructures, aimed at providing healthy and child-friendly spaces. Its location, at the heart of Castres' industrial districts, also reflects a desire to bring the school closer to the working areas, in a period marked by the rise of social and educational policies carried by progressive municipalities.
