Gué sur la Bidouze (non-cadaster box, between plots ZC 48 and ZD 42): inscription by order of 12 December 1986
Origin and history
The Biduze ford, located in Béhasque-Lapiste in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is a modest but emblematic work, consisting of an alignment of flat stone blocks crossing the river for about thirty metres. Its exact origin remains unknown, but its route suggests a passing function for travellers, especially pilgrims using Via Podiensis, one of the major roads on the way to Santiago de Compostela. This ford was said to have served as a ramp between the old Mauléon and Saint-Palais road, facilitating the crossing of the Bidouze for walkers coming from the south.
Listed as a Historical Monument by order of 12 December 1986, the ford illustrates the ingenuity of medieval or pre-modern facilities dedicated to pedestrian and religious mobility. Although not cadastred precisely, its location between plots ZC 48 and ZD 42 attests to its anchoring in the local historical landscape. Sources, such as Monumentum, highlight its possible role in pilgrimage networks, without providing exact dating or mention of sponsors.
Today, the ford on the Bidouze remains a material testimony of the ancient exchanges and movements in the Basque Country. Its state of conservation and accessibility (noted as poor in terms of precise location) make it both fragile and memory-laden. There is no information as to whether it is open to visit or integrated into a current tourist route.
