Origin and history
The Guimard building of the station Monceau is an access to the Paris metro, designed in 1900 by the architect Hector Guimard for the Compagnie générale du Métropolitain. It is one of the emblematic achievements of Art Nouveau, an architectural and decorative style that developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This edicle, located boulevard de Courcelles opposite Monceau Park, was listed as historic monuments by order of February 12, 2016, recognizing its heritage and historical value.
The station Monceau itself was opened to the public on 7 October 1902, as part of the commissioning of the section between Étoile (today Charles de Gaulle - Étoile) and Antwerp of Line 2 Nord. This line, originally called line 2 North, simply became line 2 in 1907. The Guimard edicle, with its organic forms and cast iron structures, symbolizes the aesthetic and technical innovation of this period, while marking the entrance to a station located near a historic park and a residential area in Paris.
In 2016, the school was officially protected to preserve the architectural heritage of Hector Guimard, whose creations for the Paris metro became icons of the urban heritage. The station Monceau, with its Guimard access, remains a testimony to the history of Parisian transport and the artistic evolution of the city at the beginning of the 20th century.
