Origin and history

The Guimard building of the Quatre-Septembre station is a historic access to the Paris metro station, located on Rue du Quatre-Septembre in the 2nd arrondissement. Designed by architect Hector Guimard in the Art Nouveau style, it is characteristic of the entrances to the Paris metro at the beginning of the 20th century. This building, which has been listed as a historic monument since 1978, marks the entrance to the station opened on November 3, 1904, almost two weeks after the first section of Line 3 came into service.

Quatre-Septembre station derives its name from the eponymous street, commemorating the proclamation of the Third Republic on 4 September 1870. She was the first in the network to wear a name linked to a symbolic date. Between 1974 and 1984, its docks were modernized with the decorative style "Andreu-Motte", marked by green and white tiles. In 2003, the corridors were renovated, resulting in the partial disappearance of the original elements.

The Guimard edicle, the only access to the station, is distinguished by its fixed staircase decorated with plant motifs typical of Art Nouveau. Located at the corner of the streets of Choiseul and Monsigny, it was protected by an order in 1978, then its protection was renewed in 2016. The resort, frequented by nearly 2 million annual travellers before 2020, is a testament to the history of Parisian transport and the functional architecture of the early century.

In 2016, RATP temporarily renamed the station "Premier Avril" as part of an April fish, illustrating its anchoring in Parisian popular culture. Nearby, emblematic places such as the Centorial (former headquarters of Crédit Lyonnais) or the Théâtre de la Michodière underline its importance in the urban landscape. The station is also mentioned in Benjamin Biolay's September Four Station song, performed by Vanessa Paradis.
