Origin and history

The Guimard building of the Philippe Auguste station, located in Paris, is an access to the metro designed in 1900 by architect Hector Guimard for the Compagnie du Métropolitain. It is one of the emblematic Art Nouveau achievements of the Parisian network, inaugurated in 1903 with the extension of the 2 Nord line. This edicle, registered to historical monuments since 1978 and re-registered in 2016, is distinguished by its characteristic ornamental style, contrasting with the more sober accesses of the following decades.

The Philippe Auguste station, opened on 31 January 1903, marks the culmination of the extension of line 2 from Antwerp to Bagnolet (now Alexandre Dumas). His name pays tribute to King Philippe Auguste (1180–1223), the only French monarch to give his name to a metro station, via adjacent avenue. The station is located at the junction of the 11th and 20th arrondissements, under the Boulevard de Charonne, near the Père-Lachaise cemetery.

The main access (n°1), adorned with the Guimard edicle, is located on the central ground of the boulevard de Charonne, facing n° 149. A second access, sober and in Derval style ( 1930s), completes the set. The Guimard church, with its vegetal curves and cast iron structures, embodies the visual identity of the original Parisian metro. Its heritage protection covers all remaining elements designed by Guimard for the network.

In 2003, the station was renovated as part of the Metro Renewal programme, modernizing corridors and lighting. In 2018, the docks were completely redesigned (A metro + beautiful), replacing the Green Motte seats with blue Akiko seats and metal advertising frames with white ceramics. These transformations contrast with the historical character of the church, preserved in the state.

With 1.7 million passengers in 2019, Philippe Auguste is one of the network's least frequented stations. The health crisis of 2020 reduced its traffic to 925 913 entrants, before a slight recovery in 2021 (1.2 million). The station remains a testament to the functional and aesthetic architecture of the Paris metro, between Art Nouveau heritage and urban modernity.
