Origin and history
The house Guitry is a mansion located in Azé, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the second half of the 19th century, it belonged to a wine estate and is distinguished by its eclectic architecture, typical of bourgeois resort residences of the time. Its most remarkable element is a wooden gallery, whose openwork balustrades and festive lamprequins evoke an exotic style, perhaps inspired by the universal exhibitions of 1889 or 1900, although a family tradition makes it go back to 1860.
The gallery, made of local wood from Azé, illustrates the taste of the era for picturesque scenery and distant influences, while remaining consistent with the architectural tendencies of the wine bourgeoisie. The house, including its roofs, facades and gallery, was listed as historic monuments on September 30, 2013. This classification protects a whole representative of the rural and residential heritage of the 19th century, marked by the rise of the wine estates in Saône-et-Loire.
The building is part of a historical context where Burgundy, and more broadly the region, is experiencing economic development linked to viticulture. Master houses like this were both a residence and a symbol of prosperity for landowners. Their architecture often reflected various influences, mixing local tradition and exoticism, as evidenced by the gallery of the Guitry House. Today, the monument remains a preserved example of this heritage, although its access to the public or current uses are not specified in the available sources.
