Origin and history

The hotel of Thieuville is a former mansion located in Valognes, Manche, Normandy. Built in the 16th and 18th centuries by the Counts of Thieuville, it perfectly illustrates the civil architecture of this period in the region. Its facades, roofs and some interiors (such as the large living room) have been protected since 1979, reflecting its heritage importance.

In 1840, Mademoiselle de Thieuville offered the hotel to the nuns of Saint Vincent de Paul, who turned him into a charity house. The building then houses a work place for learning lace from poor young girls, then a soup shop. These practices reflect its social role in the 19th century, marked by charitable actions in favour of disadvantaged populations.

Today, the hotel in Thieuville hosts the museum of brandy and old crafts, while retaining remarkable architectural elements such as its entrance gate and fence wall. Owned by the commune, it remains a symbol of the Varoese heritage, mixing aristocratic history, religious commitment and contemporary cultural vocation.
