Origin and history
Hotel Saint-Simon is an emblematic building of the French Renaissance, erected around 1530 in the centre of Angoulême, Charente. Its stone façade, characteristic of the Renaissance style, is decorated with pilasters with capitals decorated with diamond and roaches, as well as medallions representing busts. Although the interior was completely redesigned at the beginning of the 19th century, this facade retains original architectural elements, such as a turret covered with slates and a forebody pierced with bays and skylights flanked by candelabras. The monument bears witness to the influence of ancient models in the civil architecture of the period.
Originally, the hotel belonged to a younger branch of the family of the memorialist Louis de Rouvroy, Duke of Saint-Simon, although the latter was not directly linked to its construction. In the 18th century, the building housed the maré chambre (1771), then was transformed into a school of dance and fencing, reflecting its adaptation to the successive needs of the city. It was listed as a historical monument in 1925 and is now owned by the municipality of Angoulême. Its location on Rue de la Cloche-Verte, in a historical district, makes it a privileged witness to urban planning and Angoumoisine social life for five centuries.
The sculptural decoration of the façade, marked by geometric motifs and medallions busts, illustrates the adoption of the aesthetic canons of the Italian Renaissance in France. The two attic windows, framed by candelabras, and the first-floor sill crosses, underline the initial aristocratic status of the building. Despite the interior transformations, the facade remains a rare example of Renaissance civil architecture preserved in Charente, offering a contrast to subsequent reconstructions. Its inscription as historic monuments in 1925 preserved this heritage, while integrating the hotel into the cultural landscape of New Aquitaine.
