The boucan, as located on the attached location plan, of the Habitation Fond Cabre, shown in the cadastre section AX, parcel 709: inscription by order of 21 October 2024

Origin and history

The Fond-Cabre dwelling is a monument located in the commune of Saint-Claude, Guadeloupe, in the overseas department of the same name. This site is representative of the agricultural and industrial dwellings that have marked the economic history of Lower Earth, notably through sugar production and activities related to the processing of local products. Although specific architectural or historical details are not provided in available sources, its recent listing as Historic Monument underscores its heritage importance.

The Fond-Cabre housing block, protected by decree of 21 October 2024, is a vestige of the facilities dedicated to the production and drying of foodstuffs, typical of colonial farms in the French Antilles. These structures played a central role in the plantation economy, allowing the processing of crops before their export. In Saint-Claude, as in other communes in Guadeloupe, these houses were often organised around an agricultural holding, incorporating living, working and productive spaces, reflecting a society structured by the colonial system and slavery until its abolition in 1848.
