Ruins of the dwelling: beast mill with the canal, the basin with its restraint and the tomb (Box S 4): inscription by order of 8 October 1993
Origin and history
The residence Bord de Mer, located in the Robert in Martinique, is a rare vestige of an 18th and 19th century sugar farm. Its ruins, still anchored in their original environment – sugar cane fields – offer a material testimony of the colonial economy of Martinique. The sugar factory, the only partially standing building, is distinguished by its heterogeneous apparatus: stones, bricks and coarse mortar, reflecting the local construction techniques of the period. The foundations of the main house, which has now disappeared, as well as the canal and pillars of the beast mill, remain as tangible traces of past agricultural activity.
The site was protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 8 October 1993, covering specifically the ruins of the beast mill, its canal, the reservoir and a tomb. These elements illustrate the typical spatial organization of Martiniquia sugar houses, where hydraulic infrastructure and production buildings formed a coherent whole. The lack of major restoration and the approximate location (map precision noted as "passable") underline both the vulnerability and authenticity of the site, preserved in a state close to its post-colonial abandonment.
The surrounding sugar cane fields, still in cultivation, reinforce the exceptional character of this place, where industrial heritage and agricultural landscape overlap. This context offers a direct reading of the economic dynamics that shaped Martinique, between sugar farming, servile work and wage-earning, and landscape transformation. The habitation Bord de Mer thus embodies an architectural, social and environmental memory, rare in its relative integrity despite the outrages of time.
