Origin and history

The Clermont-Ferrand Wheat Hall, built between 1762 and 1771 by architect François-Charles Dijon, illustrates the 18th century urban policy aimed at modernising trade. This neoclassical building, rectangular with a central courtyard and vaulted galleries, was designed to facilitate grain control and storage. It reflects the economic importance of grain markets in an expanding city.

In 1822, architect Louis-Charles Ledru raised the building to meet growing needs. In the 19th century, the hall also houses a school of fine arts, marking its place in local cultural life. It remains dedicated to this use until 1999, before being closed in 2006 when the school moved to new premises.

Ranked a historic monument in 2002, the hall experienced a new artistic life in 2018, when street art artists (Keymi, Motte, Waro, Beame414, Deft) took part in a project supported by DRAC. After years of uncertainty about its destination, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region decided in 2019 to rehabilitate it to install the Fonds régional d'art contemporain, with a planned opening at the end of 2025.

Located at the corner of Ballainvilliers Streets and the Marshal-Joffre, the hall today embodies an architectural heritage redesigned for modern art. Its acquisition by the General Council of Puy-de-Dôme, and then by the region, underscores its sustainable role in the cultural landscape of Clermont. Rehabilitation works are part of a dynamic of valuing historical heritage at the service of contemporary creation.
