Origin and history
The Aire-sur-l'Adour Grain Hall, built between 1855 and 1860, is an iconic Second Empire building in the Landes department. An octagonal shape, it is characterized by a gallery of arches in the middle of the hanger resting on square pillars, as well as a south entrance porch surmounted by an attic. Its central body, pierced by blind dioculi, is crowned by a lantern, an architectural element typical of the halls of this period.
The hall was listed as historic monuments by order of 29 October 1975, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the commune, it embodies the economic importance of grain halls in 19th century rural cities, serving as a trading place for cereals and other agricultural commodities. Its architecture, both functional and aesthetic, reflects the urban concerns of the time.
Located in Place du Commerce in Aire-sur-l'Adour, the hall integrates into a regional context marked by flourishing cereal farming. The Landes, then undergoing transformation under the Second Empire, saw the development of public infrastructure designed to modernise trade. The hall, with its large stone arches, symbolizes this dynamic of progress and structure of urban spaces.
