Origin and history
The Grain Hall of Sées is an emblematic building built between 1833 and 1836, in the centre of the city of Sées, in the department of Orne. This building, representative of 19th-century utility architecture, was originally dedicated to grain trade, a major economic activity of the region at that time. Its designation as historic monuments in 1980 underlines its heritage importance, while marking the beginning of a new cultural vocation.
Beginning in the 1980s, the hall was converted into a municipal media library, adapting to contemporary needs while preserving its historical structure. Between March 2016 and November 2017, significant consolidation and rehabilitation work was carried out, at a total cost of €2.85 million, including a million grant-financed. These renovations allow a modern reopening, combining accessibility and respect for heritage.
The building is the work of Dedaux, master workman mentioned in the archives, and now belongs to the municipality of Sées. Its precise location, 842 Place des Halles, makes it a central point of the city, both geographically and historically. Available sources, including the Merimée database and local press articles, confirm its sustainable role in community life, from the agricultural era to the digital age.
