Origin and history

The Gontaud-de-Nogaret Hall is an emblematic building located in the Lot-et-Garonne department of New Aquitaine. Built in wood, it is distinguished by its three-vessel structure, supported by poles and covered with tiles. Its location, on a square adjacent to Notre-Dame Church, makes it a central element of local heritage.

The hall has had a turbulent history. Destroyed in 1580 during the plundering and burning of the city by Catholics, it was rebuilt in the seventeenth century. In 1733 repairs were attested by a quotation, marking a first restoration in the second quarter of the 18th century. Around 1888, a decorated pavilion, surmounted by a bellet and covered in dardoise, was added to the first span of the central ship.

Classified as a historic monument since 14 August 1958, the hall embodies the traditional architecture of the market halls. Its long-paned roof, its wooden frame and its role in community life make it a valuable testimony to local history. The property of the municipality remains a symbolic place for the inhabitants of Gontaud-de-Nogaret.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its heritage importance. The lobby is also referenced in works such as Christian Airiau (2014), highlighting its integration into the cultural landscape of Lot-et-Garonne. Its listing as historic monuments enhances its protection and enhancement for future generations.
