Origin and history

The hall of Saint-Gaudens, located in Place du Palais, was built between 1830 and 1843 under the direction of architect J. Stupuy. This rectangular building is distinguished by its interior division into two vessels and six spans, separated by five doric columns. Its opening on the outside is made by four arcades in width and six in length, illustrating a classic style adapted to the Pyrenean context.

Originally conceived as a grain hall, this structure reflects the economic importance of local markets in the 19th century. Its architecture, both functional and aesthetic, makes it a testament to the urban planning of the time. The hall, owned by the commune, was partially protected by a registration order in 2004, excluding its recent interior developments.

The monument is part of a regional context marked by intense agricultural and commercial activity. The halls, like that of Saint-Gaudens, served as a central place for exchanges, strengthening the social and economic cohesion of cities. Their architecture, which was often neat, also reflected the prestige of the municipalities and their desire for modernization during the 19th century.
