Origin and history
Souillac Hall is a public building built between 1832 and 1836, on the site of four pre-existing houses. This building, rectangular plan without interior division, stands out for its four sides open in stone arches. It is a rare example of neo-classical architecture in Quercy, a region marked by a rural and artisanal economy.
The Hall was listed as historic monuments on October 11, 2004, recognizing its heritage value. At the time of its construction, the halls played a central role in local life: they housed markets, gatherings and exchanges, reflecting the social and economic organization of small towns in southwestern France.
Today owned by the municipality of Souillac, the hall retains its public use, although its exact functions (visits, rentals, events) are not specified in the available sources. Its sober and functional architecture illustrates the practical needs of 19th century communities, while integrating aesthetic elements inspired by neo-classicism, the dominant current of the period.
