Halles (cad. AB 66): entry by order of 16 May 1979

Origin and history

The halls of Vauvillers are an emblematic building located in the commune of Vauvillers, in the department of Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the 17th century, they represent an architectural heritage typical of the places of commerce and assembly of that time. Their structure, still preserved today, reflects the importance of the halls in the economic and social life of French villages.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 16 May 1979, these halls are protected for their heritage value. Their inscription in the Merimée base and their precise location on the Place du Marché in Vauvillers underline their anchoring in the local urban fabric. Although the sources do not specify their current use, their status as communal property suggests a public vocation, whether it be tourist, cultural or commercial.

In the 17th century, the halls played a central role in the towns and villages of Franche-Comté. They served as a place of exchange for agricultural and artisanal products, while being a space of sociability for the inhabitants. Their architecture, often made of wood or stone, reflected local construction techniques and the practical needs of merchants. These buildings were generally located in the heart of the localities, as is the case in Vauvillers, where the Market Square was a key point of collective life.
