Origin and history
The Halle Saint-Pierre de Châteauneuf-sur-Loire is a former boathouse built in 1844 in the port of Châtillon-sur-Loire. Designed to house boats and goods during transhipments, this building reflects the importance of river trade on the Loire in the 19th century. Its wooden structure, protected by layers of ceruse, and its columns in Tuscan capital fir illustrate the construction techniques of the period.
In 1854, the hall was dismantled and rebuilt on its current site at Châteauneuf-sur-Loire to serve as a grain hall. This shift marks a transition to a commercial land vocation, while maintaining its link with the history of the sailors. The building, composed of two seven-span vessels, rests on stone dice and a characteristic structure, rare monumental testimony of this activity.
Listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments since 1990, the Halle Saint-Pierre now belongs to the commune. Its architecture and history make it a symbol of the heritage of the Niger, combining river heritage and adaptation to local needs. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory (note 7/10), and its official address is the Place de la Vieille-Halle, although GPS coordinates suggest 8 Place de la Halle Saint-Pierre.
