Origin and history
The halls of Auzon are a medieval building located in the centre of the old village of Auzon, in the department of Haute-Loire (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Dating from the 12th or 13th centuries, they are distinguished by their structure and beams covering a single span, supported by a rear wall overlooking a road to the lower town. Their main façade, facing the finish street, rests on pillars connected by a bench, decorated with chamfers and simple cutlery, including one door of the typical billets of the 12th century. A mascaron is visible two meters high near the entrance.
Founded in 1412 by H. de Montmorin, the annual fairs were organized there, giving these halls a central economic role for the region. Their structure, preserved despite centuries, reflects medieval architectural techniques, with decorative elements such as billets and mascaron, rare for this type of utility building. Their inscription in historical monuments in 1962 allowed their conservation, highlighting their heritage value.
The property of the halls is now owned by the municipality of Auzon. Their precise location, at 1 Rue le Pavé, and their state of conservation make it a remarkable testimony of medieval civil architecture in Auvergne. Available sources, such as the Mérimée bases or Carol Maillard (2003), document their historical importance and integration into the urban landscape of Auzon, between high and low city.
