Origin and history
The Halles de Corbeil-Essonnes is a covered market located in the heart of the city, in the Essonne department. This monument, registered in the inventory of Historical Monuments since 1987, embodies 19th century utility architecture, dedicated to local trade. Its location on Roger-Salengro Square makes it a central place in the daily and economic life of the municipality.
Covered markets, such as Corbeil-Essonnes, played an essential role in French cities in the 19th century. They were used to structure the trade in fresh and artisanal products, while providing a protected space for merchants and customers. This type of construction reflects the increasing urbanization of the period and the emphasis placed on hygiene and the organisation of public spaces.
Today, these halls remain symbols of communal heritage and collective memory.
