Halles (Case E 736): classification by decree of 28 February 1964
Origin and history
The Halles de Viteaux, located in the commune of Vitteaux in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, date from the first quarter of the seventeenth century. This monument, classified by decree on 28 February 1964, is a typical example of the halls built at this time to house local markets and trade. Their architecture reflects the economic and social needs of the rural communities of the time, where these spaces played a central role in everyday life.
In the 17th century, the halls were essential places for the inhabitants of the towns and villages of Burgundy. They served not only as a place of trade for agricultural and artisanal products, but also as a meeting point for the inhabitants. Their hard construction, like that of Vitteaux, often marked the growing importance of the municipality and its ability to organize structured economic activities. These buildings were generally placed at the heart of villages, symbolizing their vital role in collective life.
The Halles de Viteaux are now protected under the Historic Monuments, with an official classification in 1964. Their precise location, rue Hubert-Languet, is documented in the Mérimée base, and their property belongs to the municipality. Although their current condition and use (visit, rental, etc.) are not specified in the available sources, their preservation reflects their heritage and historical value to the region.
