Origin and history

The Haras national de Pompadour is located in the enclosure of Pompadour Castle in Arnac-Pompadour, in Corrèze. Founded in the 18th century by the Marquise of Pompadour near the castle, it becomes a key place for equestrian breeding thanks to the standards of the royal stables. After its closure to the Revolution, Napoleon restored it in 1802 and introduced Arab standards, discovered during the Egyptian campaign. The site is now France's second national stud and a centre of excellence for the Anglo-Arab race.

The haras spans several domains, including the Puy Marmont, where the stables of the stallions and buildings built between the 15th and 19th centuries are located. The castle, mentioned from the 12th century, was transformed in the 18th century by Louis XV for the Marquise of Pompadour, which developed the breeding. The equestrian infrastructures (large stable of 1785, training stable of 1837) and the medieval remains (fortress of the 15th century, ogival chapel) bear witness to its architectural and functional evolution.

Pompadour is now a dynamic equestrian pole, hosting more than 160 days of annual events, including French championships and international competitions. The site offers tours, equestrian shows in the Orangerie ride, and races on its racetrack. It also houses the administrative headquarters of IFCE (French horse and horse riding institute) and SIRE, the national register of equidae, consolidating its central role in the French equestrian heritage.

Ranked a Historical Monument, the stud includes protected elements such as the castle, the stables of the Marquise, or the remains of the 15th century. His history is marked by figures such as the Marquise of Pompadour, Napoleon, or the directors of the 19th century (Chebrou de Lespinats, Gayot), linked to the creation of the Anglo-Arab race. The path of chestnut trees leading to the hippodrome, planted by the Duke of Choiseul, adds to its historical and landscape character.
