Origin and history
The house at 12bis Grande-Rue in Caudebec-en-Caux is part of a larger architectural complex, including numbers 12, 12bis and 14. These five houses, built at the end of the Middle Ages, are characteristic of wood-paned dwellings of this period. Their original structure was partially transformed in the 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting architectural developments and the needs of the occupants of the period. They are organized around two narrow courses, typical of medieval urban ensembles.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 9 December 1940, this house illustrates the evolution of construction techniques and lifestyles in Normandy. Changes made in the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the addition of stone elements or the reorganization of interior spaces, demonstrate an adaptation to the new standards of comfort and aesthetics. The whole, although redesigned, retains significant traces of its medieval origin, especially in its structure and spatial distribution.
The location of these houses in the historic centre of Caudebec-en-Caux underscores their importance in the city's urban fabric. Their preservation now allows us to study the architectural transitions between the Middle Ages and the modern era in Normandy. The listing of Historic Monuments guarantees their protection and highlights their role in the local heritage.
