Origin and history

The house located on the 7 Route du Havre in Caudebec-en-Caux is a building dating from the 4th quarter of the 16th century. This building, inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 21 March 1960, is distinguished by its facades and roofs, protected for their heritage value. Its architecture reflects the characteristics of the Renaissance civil constructions in Normandy, a period marked by economic growth and a diversification of architectural styles.

Caudebec-en-Caux, located in the Seine-Maritime department (in the Normandy region), was at that time a strategic place on the road between Rouen and Le Havre. Bourgeois or merchant houses, like this one, bear witness to the prosperity of river and maritime trade. These homes often served as residences for local notables or traders, playing a central role in the economic and social life of the region.

The accuracy of its location is assessed as satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), although the exact address in the Merimée base (7 Route du Havre) differs slightly from the GPS coordinates (12 Route du Havre, Rives-en-Seine). This disparity illustrates the challenges of historical mapping, where administrative divisions and denominations evolve over time.
