Origin and history
The house located in 4 Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville in Barr is a civil building built during the first half of the 18th century. It was erected for a butcher, as evidenced by the emblems carved on the dressing room: a beef head and a cutlery, traditional symbols of this corporation. The initials HGR and AVE, engraved on a shield, probably designate the employers, a couple whose precise identity remains unknown.
Several architectural elements have specific dates: the carriageway door of the entrance passage is dated 1726, the lodge of 1727, and the entrance door to the courtyard of 1739. These inscriptions are used to monitor the development of construction over a decade. The main façade, characteristic of the Alsatian style of the time, was protected by an inscription as historical monuments on 25 April 1935.
This building illustrates the domestic architecture of affluent artisans in Alsace in the 18th century. Its state of preservation and its decorative details make it a rare testimony of the trades and way of life of the bourgeois of Barr under the Ancien Régime. The house, still located in the city centre, retains both historical and social heritage value for the municipality.
