Origin and history
La Maison du 17 rue Bourgmayer is a house located in the centre of Bourg-en-Bresse, in the Ain department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its two-storey structure, organized around a small inner courtyard, and by a garden to the west. This building illustrates the civil architecture of the Renaissance in Bresse, with characteristic elements such as the corbelled facades and a remarkable structure in the attic on the second floor.
The facade on Rue des Marronniers, restored and decrepy, highlights a beautiful example of wood, while the one overlooking Rue Bourgmayer, redone in stone, bears a statue of the Virgin in a niche and the remains of a fountain protected by a wrought iron gate. Although the interior lost its heritage interest, the house was partially classified and listed as the Historic Monuments on November 29, 1977, covering both the wooden and stone facades and the corresponding roofs. A mention of this monument appears in issue 92 of the journal Visages de l'Ain, published in 1967.
The classification refers specifically to wood-paned facades and roofs, while the inscription covers the stone façade of Bourgmayer Street and its roof. These protections highlight the historical and architectural value of the building, representative of the Bressan heritage. The location of the house, at the intersection of two streets, as well as its decorative elements such as the statue and the fountain, make it a notable testimony of urban planning and daily life in Bourg-en-Bresse during the Renaissance.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a Historic Monument and provide details of its structure and protections. However, little information is available about its historical occupants or its precise use over the centuries. The house remains a preserved example of the bourgeois or artisanal home of the time, typical of the Ain region.
