Abbé d'Estaing - Sponsor and Resident
Fits build the house during his exile.
Origin and history
The house of the Abbé d'Estaing in Murol was built in the 17th and 18th centuries, at the initiative of the Abbé himself, forced to a residence under supervision at the nearby castle. As an uncomfortable man, he had this house erected probably at the site of an old advanced defence of the fortress. The main house, dating back to the 18th century, consists of a ground floor, a single floor and a high pierced with stone dorms, some of which were redesigned in the 19th century.
Located in this house is a small building of the 15th century, covered in appentis and decorated with an armored panel. This last element, protected by a 1975 decree, is the only medieval vestige still visible. Subsequent modifications, such as the search of the bays, reflect the successive adaptations of the building to the needs of its occupants, while maintaining traces of its defensive origin.
The building thus illustrates the transition between a medieval military architecture and a civil residence of the Enlightenment, marked by the increasing comfort of ecclesiastical elites. His story is also that of a golden exile, where the abbot d'Estaing, although guarded, was able to offer a house adapted to his rank, far from the feudal austerity of Murol Castle.
