Origin and history

The Maison Gallis is a historic monument located in Sospel, in the Alpes-Maritimes department (06), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its typical civil architecture of this period, with notable decorative elements such as a column and a capital on the ground floor.

The building was partially protected by an order of 10 December 1949, which specifically inscribed the column and the capital on the ground floor. This official recognition underscores its heritage interest, although the information available on its detailed history or occupants remains limited. The precise location, 20 rue de la République, is attested by the Merimée and Monumentum bases.

Sospel, a border town of the Alpes-Maritimes, experienced an economy in the eighteenth century marked by transalpine trade and agriculture. Bourgeois houses such as the Gallis House reflected local prosperity, often serving as residences for merchants or notables. Their architecture blended Provencal and Italian influences, characteristic of this border area.
