Origin and history
The house located at 40 Quai Vauban in Besançon is a historic monument whose facade and roof, as well as the roadway and the adjacent wharf, were inscribed by order of 16 September 1933. This building is closely linked to the defensive history of the city, being associated with the Citadelle and the urban enclosure of Besançon, themselves protected for their architectural and archaeological remains.
The urban enclosure of Besançon, some of which date back to ancient periods, was further registered by order of 10 September 2019. This decree covers various remains, such as the ramparts between the bastioned towers of Rivotte and Brégille, the bezel of Brégille, or the guard corps of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These protections underline the strategic and heritage importance of these works, which are a testament to the evolution of the city's fortifications.
The location of the house on the Vauban wharf places the monument in a historical area marked by military and urban developments. The wharf, bordering the Doubs, played a key role in the logistics and defense of Besançon, a fortified city from Roman times. The accuracy of the location is estimated as fair (note 5/10), possibly reflecting successive urban changes.
Although the practical information on opening to the public, room rental or services offered is not specified, the house remains a remarkable part of the bisontin heritage. Its association with the UNESCO World Heritage Citadelle reinforces its historical and tourist interest. Available sources, including Monumentum, confirm its status as a Historic Monument without providing further details on its current use.
