Origin and history

The Druène House, located in Luz-Saint-Sauveur in the Hautes-Pyrénées, is a rectangular building combining neoclassical architecture and local techniques (moellon, coated, slate). Its main façade, on a drop-up wall, has four spans and three levels, with bays in the middle and a wrought iron balcony. Built in the 18th century, it served first as a customs post when the valley was only accessible by the Tourmalet Pass.

At the beginning of the 19th century, a fabric factory in Barèges settled there, marking its role in the local textile industry. The roof of 600 m2, extended in awning over a gallery with columns, retains three windows on the four original ones. Inside, the kitchen and its woodwork testify to its ancient organization. The neoclassical style, typical of the romantic era, already appears on the cadastral plane of 1837.

In 1882 the house belonged to Christine Druene, linked to the local thermal doctor. The wrought iron bodyguards, decorated with family monograms, date from the second half of the 19th century. Today, it houses the headquarters of the Association des Amis de Saint-Sauveur, after its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1993 for its heritage and architectural interest.
