Origin and history
The house at 10 rue Saint-Mathieu in Quimper is a typical example of 17th-century civil architecture. Its wooden panels facade and lattis crepasing reflect the local construction techniques of the time. It is integrated into the ancient urban fabric of Quimper, a historic town of Brittany.
Classified as a Historic Monument, this house saw its facade on street and its corresponding roof cover protected by order of 22 May 1956. This type of building bears witness to the architectural heritage of Brittany, marked by the use of wood and half-timbered structures, characteristic of medieval and modern city centres.
The area where this house is located, in the Finistère, was probably an active place of life in the seventeenth century, with artisanal and commercial activities. Wood-paned houses served both as homes and sometimes as workplaces for local artisans or merchants, playing a central role in the daily life of the city.
