Origin and history
The house located at 7, rue des Cordiers in Riquewihr is an emblematic example of Alsatian civil architecture from the 3rd quarter of the 17th century. Built in 1672, it combines a masonry ground floor with wood-pan floors, with successive corbellations. Its gable on the street, its carved chambranle windows and its door in the middle of a hanger decorated with roses reflect the craftsmanship of the time. Originally, the building housed a cellar, a press (accessible via a bay in the middle of the hanger) and a harvester, testifying to its wine use.
The house was built for Hans Ulrich Hugelin, a winemaker and recipient of the local hospital. Its initials (H V H) and the date of construction appear on the carved windows and the entrance door, alongside its coat of arms. Ranked a historic monument in 1930, it retains remarkable elements such as a firewood pulley and a wooden screw staircase. Its architecture illustrates the central role of viticulture in the economy of Riquewihr, a city renowned for its wines since the Middle Ages.
The building combines domestic and professional functions, characteristic of Alsatian winemakers' houses. The original loggia, later closed, was used to store wood in the attic. Its designation as historic monuments includes the main façade and roof, highlighting its heritage value. Today, it embodies the wine and architectural heritage of Alsace under the Old Regime.
