Origin and history

The house at 54 rue du Commerce in Lons-le-Saunier is a civil building built between the late 17th and 18th centuries. It is a typical example of the domestic architecture of this period in the Franche-Comté region, now integrated in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inclusion in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1926 underlines its heritage importance, especially for its facade, an architectural element protected by ministerial decree.

Lons-le-Saunier, capital of the Jura department, was at that time a developing city, marked by artisanal and commercial activities. Bourgeois houses, like this one, often reflected the growing prosperity of wealthy families linked to trade or local administration. These buildings served both as a residence and as a symbol of social status in a society still very hierarchical.

The protection of the façade in 1926 is part of a broader approach to preserving the French heritage, initiated at the beginning of the twentieth century. This measure aims to preserve original architectural features, such as patterns, openings or decorations, that illustrate styles in vogue in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, this type of monument offers a material testimony of the urban evolution and lifestyles of the provincial elites under the Old Regime and at the beginning of the modern period.
