Origin and history
The House Le Castelet, located in Domme in Dordogne, is a noble house built in the seventeenth century. It consists of a body of main houses overlooking the street of the ramparts, near the gate del Bos, connected to gardens below by a small bridge. A square tower, with a pyramid, houses a French staircase and completes the architectural ensemble.
Inside, the house preserves typical 17th-century stone fireplaces, testimony to its status as an aristocratic residence. The monument is partially protected: its facades and roofs were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 20 November 1956. The precise location, 22 Place de la Rhode, is famous for its picturesque setting between ramparts and views of the valley.
The house illustrates the civil architecture of the area under the Old Regime, where noble houses often incorporated defensive or landscaped elements, such as the terraced gardens and the proximity of fortifications. Its state of conservation and its inscription make it a remarkable example of the aquitaine domestic heritage of that time.
