The Romanesque frieze placed in the façade of the house: inscription by decree of 5 July 1928

Origin and history

This house located in Tournus, Burgundy-Franche-Comté, dates from the 12th century. It is distinguished by a Romanesque frieze integrated into its facade, an architectural element typical of this medieval period. Although little detailed information was available on its history, its inscription as a Historic Monument by decree of 5 July 1928 underlined its heritage importance.

In the 12th century, Tournus was a city marked by its religious and commercial role, notably thanks to the abbey Saint-Philibert. The houses of this time often reflected Romanesque influence, with carved decorations like this frieze. These buildings served both as dwellings and as symbols of the social status of their owners, in a society where the Church and local lords played a central role.

The location of this house, between Rue de la République and Rue Jean-Jaurès, suggests an integration into the medieval urban fabric of Tournus. Its ranking in 1928 aims to preserve this testimony of Romanesque civil architecture, rare for this period. Today, it remains an example of Burgundy vernacular heritage, although its access to the public is not specified.
