Origin and history

The house located at 6 rue Saint-Jean in Provins is a 15th century building, typical of the medieval civil architecture of this UNESCO World Heritage town. This monument, whose location is estimated to be fair (note 5/10), is distinguished by its street façade, roof and vaulted cellar, elements protected by a decree of inscription in 1962. These characteristics reflect the construction techniques and domestic uses of the time in Île-de-France.

In the 15th century, Provins was a prosperous city, marked by its role in the trade and fairs of Champagne. Bourgeois houses, like this one, served both as a dwelling and as a place for artisanal or commercial activities. Their preservation today offers a tangible testimony of medieval urban life, in a region where the architectural heritage is particularly rich.

The protected elements, such as the vaulted cellar, suggest a mixed use of spaces, adapted to the economic and social needs of the time.
