Origin and history
The houses located at 26 rue Élie-Fréron in Quimper constitute a remarkable architectural complex, dating from the 16th century. Their protection under the Historical Monuments, effective since 1932, specifically concerns facades and roofs, highlighting their heritage value in the historic center of Quimper, Brittany. These buildings illustrate the typical residential style of the Breton Renaissance, a period marked by urban and commercial growth in the region.
The location of these houses, in an emblematic street of Quimper, reflects the importance of this city as an economic and cultural crossroads in Finistère from the 16th century. At that time, Quimper, then under ducal and then royal influence, developed around his artisanal and merchant activities, particularly related to the production of earthenware and river trade. The bourgeois houses, such as those on Rue Élie-Fréron, bear witness to the prosperity of an urban elite and its investment in the beautification of the city.
Their preservation makes it possible today to study the evolution of habitat and construction techniques in Brittany during the Renaissance.
