Key figures

Dominique Ferrère - Artisan-sculptor Author of the table in pink marble.

Origin and history

The Saint-Barthélemy church of Andrest, classified as a Historical Monument, is distinguished by its Latin cross architecture, typical of the eighteenth century. Inside, the nave is lined with wooden stands and panelled walls, while the arms of the transept house two retables and a confessional. The tableau du chevet, by Dominique Ferrère, consists of six columns of pink marble supporting a wooden baldaquin, supplemented by woodwork adorning the choir.

The exterior façade, surmounted by a bell tower with three bells, opens with a bossed door with a triangular pediment. This sober yet elegant decor reflects the provincial religious art of the time. The building, registered by decree of 8 October 1987, belongs to the municipality of Andrest and remains a major architectural testimony of the Occitanie region.

Dominique Ferrère, author of the altarpiece, illustrates the 18th century local craftsmanship, mixing noble materials such as pink marble and carved wood. This altarpiece, the central piece of the choir, symbolizes the devotion and artistic know-how of the period. The church, still located in its original location (1 Rue du Docteur Calmette), retains a location deemed satisfactory a priori by the heritage sources.
