Origin and history

St John Baptist Church in Steenwerck is built at the site of an ancient Roman temple. Mentioned since 1182, it preserves baptismal fonts dating from 1587. This place of worship, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, bears witness to a long local religious history.

Destroyed during the First World War during the Battle of the Lys, the church was rebuilt in 1923 according to the plans of the Lille architect Armand Lemay. His Romano-Byzantine style, especially visible in the bell tower, and his stained glass windows made by master glassmaker Pierre Turpin illustrate the life of Saint John the Baptist. A 1/50 scale model, created in 1951, is on display.

The church organ is distinguished by its oak facade and its zinc, fir and poor alloy pipes. In 2020, a restoration project is estimated at nearly EUR 1 million. The building, which was designated an emblematic site of the Heritage Lotto in 2021, is listed in the Historic Monuments by order of 15 July 2025.
