Origin and history
The feudal motte of the Bourgs Heusas is a set of artificial reliefs located in Pleven, in the Côtes-d'Armor department, in Brittany. These structures, typical of the High Middle Ages, bear witness to the fortification techniques used to control the territory and ensure the protection of local populations. Their presence reflects the feudal organization of Breton society during this period.
The feudal mottes of the Heusas Bourgs were classified as historical monuments by order of 7 November 1961. This ranking underscores their heritage importance and their role in understanding Breton medieval history. The site is now owned by the Côtes-d'Armor department, which guarantees its preservation for future generations.
In the High Middle Ages, feudal mottes were often used as bases for wooden or stone constructions, such as towers or dungeons. They were generally surrounded by ditches and palisades, forming a coherent defensive whole. These structures played a central role in the social hierarchy, symbolizing the power of local lords and their ability to protect their vassals.
